Did You Know This About The Eiffel Tower

Categories: Just For Fun,

In light of the horrific recent events in Paris we are seeing a lot of images of the Eiffel Tower.  Here are some interesting points about the tower that you may not have known.

  • After its completion in 1889 the Eiffel Tower became the world's tallest man made structure, surpassing the Washington Monument.
  • It remained the tallest man made structure until 1930 when it lost that distinction to New York City's Chrysler Building.
  • Maurice Koechlin was the designer of the Eiffel Tower, not Gustave Eiffel.  Koechlin worked at Eiffel's architecture firm.
  • Private funds were used for 75% of the construction cost.
  • Only one person was killed in the construction of the Eiffel Tower.  Eiffel designed an elaborate system of cranes and netting to protect workers.
  • The original contract between Eiffel and city of Paris stipulated that the Eiffel Tower be torn down after 20 years.
  • As the Germans were being driven out of Paris during World War II, Hitler ordered the Eiffel Tower destroyed.  Fortunately, the general refused to obey that order.
  • Over 200,000,000 people have visited the Eiffel Tower.
